The XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (XMM-SSC) was selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1996.  The XMM-SSC provides the scientific community with the the tools necessary to exploit all of the XMM-Newton data.

Objectives

The XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC) is a consortium of ten European institutes with the following responsibilities :

  • development of the software (Science Analysis System (SAS)) for the reduction and analysis of XMM-Newton data
  • the reduction of all of the XMM-Newton data to provide to observers
  • the production of catalogues of the X-ray sources detected in the XMM-Newton data
  • the identification of the X-ray sources

IRAP’s role in the XMM-SSC

  • Head of the consortium
  • Production, validation and publication of the catalogues
  • Participation in the pipeline processing
  • Software development and identification of X-ray sources
