The Research Institute in Astrophysics and Planetology (IRAP, about 300 people and students) was created on the 1st january 2011.
It is a Mixed Research Unity (UMR 5277) of the Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France and of the CNRS, issued from the gathering of the employees coming from several laboratories of the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées ( OMP) :
- the employees of the Centre d'Etude Spatiale des Rayonnements ( CESR)
- the employees of the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Toulouse-Tarbes ( LATT)
- part of the employees of the laboratory of Dynamique Terrestre et Planétaire ( DTP)
- several researchers and teachers-researchers of the Laboratoire des Mécanismes de Transfert Géologique ( LMTG)
The IRAP people are about 300 : 110 researchers and lecturers, 80 permanent staff for the research support, 50 post-docs, 50 doctoral students, and many students in the course of their formation.
On January 1, 2016, Philippe Louarn, Director of Research at CNRS, succeeded to Martin Giard at the head of the IRAP. Martin Giard, Director of Research at CNRS as well, has assured the first term as Director of IRAP for the five-year contract running from 2011 to 2015.
